What will the impact be if Coca-Cola enter the CBD market?
St Lawerence, Jersey -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/18/2018 -- "We are closely watching the growth of non-psychoactive CBD as an ingredient in functional wellness beverages around the world. The space is evolving quickly. No decisions have been made at this time." Kent Landers Coca-Cola spokesman
What is CBD?
Cannabis contains many ingredients or 'cannabinoids'. There are about 80 known cannabinoids in cannabis. THC and CBD are the best known.
CBD is also known as cannabidiol.
THC is also known as tetrahydrocannabinol.
CBD is the non-psychoactive element in cannabis. CBD is legal in most countries including the USA, Canada and most of Europe. It is also known as medicinal cannabis.
THC is the psychoactive element in cannabis. It is THC which makes cannabis illegal. THC is the element which gets users high. It is found in recreational cannabis.
If a CBD product contains less than 0.3% THC in the US and 0.2% in Europe, then it is considered legal.
Coca-Cola and CBD
Coca-Cola has become the latest beverage company to show an interest in CBD products. Traditional beverages have experienced a drop in demand. Demand for CBD products are increasing.
The number of people using CBD oil in Britain has increased from 125,000 to 250,000 in the past 12 months, according to the Cannabis Trades Association UK.
Coca-Cola said that it is monitoring drinks infused with CBD at the minute. It is understood that Coca-Cola is in talks with the Canadian cannabis producer Aurora Cannabis. It is believed that they are considering a range of beverages which contain CBD.
This is not a new market. CBD can be found in bottled water already. There are also edible products that contain CBD such as gummie bears already on the market. As the popularity increases, the big brands are now taking notice.
Coca-Cola's potential interest in cannabis comes as a number of beverage makers are looking to supplement their beverages with CBD. This can create a unique selling point as well as health benefits. CBD is claimed to have many health benefits according to users.
Earlier in 2018, Corona beer brewer Constellation Brands Inc. announced it will spend $3.8 billion to increase its stake in Canopy Growth Corp., a Canadian cannabis producer. This is a massive indicator that beverage companies are identifying the massive potential in CBD infused drinks.
Molson Coors Brewing Co. is starting a joint venture with Quebec's Hexo's Corp., to develop cannabis drinks in Canada.
Diageo PLC, maker of Guinness, is believed to be holding discussions with at least three Canadian cannabis producers.
Heineken NV's Lagunitas craft-brewing label has launched a brand specializing in non-alcoholic drinks infused with THC.
Coca-Cola has already been diversifying its interests in reaction to declining interest of traditional soda. It owns some powerful beverage brands including Sprite and Powerade. It recently announced it will acquire the Costa Coffee chain for $5.1 billion in August 2018 which will allow further diversification.
It has also expanded into other beverages including juice, tea and mineral water over the past decade.
While recreational cannabis remains illegal at the national level in the U.S., there is growing acceptance of the use of CBD derived from cannabis to treat illnesses ranging from chronic pain to anxiety and epilepsy.
The first-ever medical treatment derived from a marijuana plant will hit the U.S. market soon, after regulators in June gave an epilepsy treatment by GW Pharmaceuticals Plc the green light.
Is this good for CBD?
CBD is gaining popularity and its profile will be increased vastly should we start to see big brands launched CBD related products.
Currently, CBD retailers are advocates with genuine passion about CBD oil and the benefits that it offers its users. CBD is considered a health supplement and that it why users take it. It is not a 'magic bullet' solution but can help as part of a healthy lifestyle.
CBD is said to help with pain relief, anxiety, stress, depression, and insomnia. CBD works directly with the Endocannabinoid System within our bodies which helps 'awaken' well-being according to many experts.
Raising awareness of CBD can only be a good thing. One concern is that the CBD contained within the beverages is so low that the effect is minimal. This could lead some people to believe that CBD doesn't work when in reality the doses were far too small to have any noticeable impact.
