Fredericksburg-based cosmetic surgeon R. Shane Palmer, MD is at the forefront of an innovative new approach to the aging face: fat grafting.
Fredericksburg, VA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/05/2018 -- Board-certified surgeon R. Shane Palmer, MD has always been dedicated to providing innovative treatments to patients who want new and modern approaches to aging.
Dr. Palmer announces a new approach to facial rejuvenation, with a focus on restoring volume in the face using the patient's own fat. Dr. Palmer performs fat grafting to the face for patients who want a more comprehensive approach to facial aging. The treatment is performed at his cosmetic surgery practice, Surgical Arts of Virginia, located in Fredericksburg, VA.
"Historically, surgeons attempted to approach aging from a 'skin-only' perspective, which, in my opinion, is not the best approach. Volume loss in the face is a much greater component of aging in the face than is skin laxity," Dr. Palmer asserts. "In order to achieve a truly youthful appearance in my patients, I account for and correct volume loss via fat grafting."
"It offers dramatic, long lasting results that use a patient's own body fat to add volume in key areas of the face," he adds.
While many surgical procedures focus only on reducing wrinkles or tightening skin, Dr. Palmer points out that a facelift can actually make a patient look worse, as it creates a taut, unnatural appearance without accounting for lost volume.
Fat grafting is different from other approaches in that it adds volume which supports the skin and reduces folds and wrinkles. A square, gaunt appearance to the face can be transformed into the youthful oval of years past.
If significant skin laxity is present despite fat grafting, then a more conservative facelift can augment the volume replacement. Early skin laxity can often be addressed with less invasive procedures, such as ThermiTight or non-invasively with ThermiSmooth. These are radio frequency devices that use heat to produce a contracting effect, leading to skin tightening.
The fat grafting procedure is surprisingly straightforward. Dr. Palmer harvests the fat from the patient's body (usually the abdomen or thighs), concentrates the fat, and then mixes the fat with Platelet Rich Plasma. Dr. Palmer then injects the fat into certain areas of the face to treat wrinkles, highlight youthful contours, and restore lost volume. IV sedation is used to keep patients comfortable.
The down time is typically 7-10 days with bruising and swelling being universal but relatively mild.
Fat grafting is often combined with other procedures, such as laser skin resurfacing, eyelid lift and neck rejuvenation, however it is quite effective as a stand alone procedure.
One other major benefit of fat grafting to the face that should be mentioned is the direct rejuvenating effects awarded the skin from the stem cells present in the fat. Ongoing studies are investigating augmentation of this rejuvenating effect and Dr. Palmer is following these developments closely.
